NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS

In addition to providing essential funding for scholarships, named scholarship funds honor and pay tribute to outstanding lawyers and judges whose lives and work exemplify the best of Massachusetts' rich legal heritage and who have contributed so much to the legal profession's landscape.

Paul M. Kane Scholarship Fund

Paul M. Kane (1942-2021)
Co-Founding Partner, McGrath & Kane

For more than forty years, a recognized titan of the domestic relations bar and gifted attorney who served as a leader in the legal community and as a mentor, educator, and example to generations of lawyers

In September 2021, the legal profession lost one of its finest members with the passing of Paul Kane. Paul was a dear friend, a brilliant domestic relations attorney, and a remarkable gentleman who leaves behind a lasting legacy of unmatched excellence and high ethical standards in the practice of law. Those who had the privilege of knowing him understand the tremendous influence he has had—as a friend, colleague, teacher and mentor.

A wonderful storyteller and masterful teacher, Paul was able to command an audience—whether a jury in a courtroom, a group of students in a classroom, or friends and colleagues in any room—through a rare combination of intelligence, professionalism, civility and humor. He committed much of his career to the education and professional development of lawyers, for which he received MCLE’s Scholar-Mentor Award in 2010. As a long-time member of MCLE’s Family Law Curriculum Advisory Committee, he helped shape continuing legal education curriculum and policy and was a driving force in the development of MCLE’s nationally recognized Family Law Trial Advocacy Workshop, which more than thirty years later continues to train attorneys in the art of trial practice

The Paul M. Kane Scholarship Fund, each year, will endow scholarships and provide training opportunities and resources for lawyers who serve the public interest, including legal aid staff attorneys, private practitioners who accept pro bono cases, and other deserving lawyers who, without financial assistance, would not be able to avail themselves of MCLE programs and resources. It will also allow those of us who knew, respected and learned from him to honor an outstanding and beloved practitioner whose life and work exemplified the best of Massachusetts’ rich legal heritage.

The creation of this fund to provide educational opportunities and resources to deserving lawyers who serve the public interest stands as a fitting tribute to Paul’s legacy as a recognized giant of the family law bar and gifted attorney who served as a leader in the legal community and an example to generations of lawyers.
